BBC Silent Witness: Evanna Lynch’s life off camera from starring in Harry Potter to opening up about her eating disorder

Evanna Lynch is best known for her role as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films.

The role was the Irish actress’s debut in the world of professional acting when she was just 14.

What is perhaps less known, Evanna’s pre-existing relationship with book series author J.K. Rowling.

At 11, Evanna began writing letters to the author after reading the books and they kept a correspondence going for some time.

It was also around this time that she developed an eating disorder that left her hospitalised on several occasions.

Rowling supported her at the time, which Evanna spoke about to Insider saying her “books and her kindness really made me want to live again”.

Her passion for the book series led her to go to a casting call for the character of Luna Lovegood in 2006 for Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.

She got the part after a screen test with Daniel Radcliffe with producer David Heyman saying: “The others could play Luna; Evanna Lynch is Luna.”

Evanna went on to reprise her role in each of the other films.

Along with success on the big screen Evanna became romantically involved with the actor that played Harry’s father James.

Evanna would date actor Robbie Javis after the filming was over from 2013-16.

After they split she began dating a musician called Andel in 2017.

Evanna is known for her animal rights activism and started the podcast The ChickPeeps with her ex Robbie, which focuses on discussion around promoting animal rights and veganism.

In contrast Andel is a ‘total meat eater’.

She spoke about her current flame with the Irish Tatler “My boyfriend is a total meat-eater. He really challenges me on these things and I have to think more.

“I have certain rules like he’s not allowed to eat baby animals when I’m around, so no lamb.

“But he always goes to vegan restaurants with me as well.”

She continued about her ideas of romance: “It’s about, ‘I like this person better than everyone else and they bring something to my life.

“I’m all about relationships being a real friendship.

“Checking every day seeing how they are and just having a best friend that you can really talk to.”

In 2019 Evanna co-founded Kinder Beauty Box, a vegan cruelty-free subscription cosmetic service.

She also spoke to Tatler about her activism: “I had an eating disorder in my teens.

“My mother said to me that I always had this kind of weird relationship with food and she was so glad to see that it has changed now.

“It’s about more than just keeping me healthy, it’s about my ethics and beliefs.

“Activism is not judgement, activism is making people think. It’s about making them realise that is what they’re supporting and asking, ‘Are you okay with this?'”

Recently, Potter fans were excited to find out that Evanna is appearing in the long running BBC One drama Silent Witness which will be airing at 9pm tonight (Tuesday September 9).
