This is the next step in hoping to eventually achieve a real group epidemic. Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday June 2 that adolescents aged 12 to 18 will have access to vaccination from June 15.
The European Medicines Agency had already given the green light on Friday for the use of the vaccine developed by the American laboratory Pfizer and the German biotech BioNTech in this age group. Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine was also the first to be authorized in Europe for people over 16 years of age, in December 2020.
Until now in France, only minors aged 16 to 18 with certain serious diseases (around 10,000 to 20,000 people according to the authorities) or close to immunocompromised people were eligible for vaccination. In some countries, such as the United States or Germany, it is already open to over 12s.
“Some adolescents have suffered a lot from confinement”
Professor Alain Fischer, chairman of the orientation council for the vaccine strategy, pleaded Sunday on LCI for an extension to adolescents, with priority given to 16-17 years. The “government vaccine” recalled the difficulties caused by the pandemic among young people, certainly less affected by the serious forms of Covid-19. “Some adolescents have suffered a lot from this confinement situation, from difficulties in their study or learning life. Especially those who are in the most difficult social conditions, he had explained. We have to get out of that, and one of the major components is vaccination. “
In the Lot, the Head of State also welcomed the fact that 50% of French adults had received a first dose of the vaccine, which according to him represents “Truly a course” in the vaccination campaign.
