In his pages, which came out of newspapers that he nurtured for years, the actor speaks, among other aspects, of his family, difficult moments and his career.
“These are not traditional memories. Yes, I tell stories from the past, but I am not interested in nostalgia, sentimentally, or in the withdrawal that most memories require, “the actor writes in the first pages of” Greenlights. “
HIS FATHER DID NOT SEE HIS TRIUMPH AS AN ACTOR.
He also states that this is not a book of advice, that he likes preachers, but that it was not his intention to preach or tell the reader what to do. A later paragraph assures “This is a playbook, based on the adventures of my life.”
The first of them was to come to this world. McConaughey was born on November 4, 1969, the last of three children from a volatile marriage that was divorced twice and married three times.
His parents tried to have another child for years without success, so when his mother, Mary Kathleen McCabe, became pregnant with him, she thought it was a tumor.
The day he was born, his father, James, was not in the hospital, he considered that the child who was about to be born was not his son.

During his childhood, judging by some of the scenes he describes, he witnessed a relationship sometimes punctuated by conflict. “I tell these stories that are bloody, ugly, and sometimes violent,” the actor told Today.
“And I think the reason I do it is that those were times when the love that we had, which was never in doubt, was more challenged, but there was never a chance that it was defeated,” he added.
His father broke his mother’s finger on several occasions, for example. In an interview on Today, he was asked if when he was little he believed his parents’ behavior was wrong. “I was scared at the time, but even then and immediately afterward, I never questioned the love Mom and Dad had or the love they gave us,” he said.
Jim McConaughey died in 1992, before seeing his son become the star he is now. During the first days of filming the film “Dazed and Confused”, the first title in which he appeared, his mother informed him of her death. He died of a heart attack while having sex with his wife, the actor’s mother.
“He would always say to me and my brothers, ‘Guys, when I go, I’ll be making love to your mother,’” McConaughey wrote.

“DALLAS BUYERS CLUB”, YOUR GREAT TRIUMPH… FOR THE MOMENT.
Matthew was a good student and athlete. He enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin to study law, but his path veered toward film production. After graduating in 1993, he signed up with a local talent agency and later met casting director Don Phillips, who told him about a character he was auditioning for and offered to participate.
This is how McConaughey landed his first role, that of David Wooderson in Richard Linklater’s “Dazed & Confused.”
Later came other titles such as “Angels in the Outfield”, 1994; “Boys on the Side”, a year later; and “Lone Star” in 1996.
That same year he released “Time to Kill”, along with Samuel L. Jackson, and the following, “Contact”, sharing the bill with Jodie Foster.
He also found a niche in romantic comedies such as 2001’s “The Wedding Planner,” in which he starred alongside Jennifer López, and 2003’s “How to Lose a Guy a 10 Days”; “Fool’s Gold”, in 2008; or “Ghostos of Girlfriends Past”, in 2009.
After exploring this genre, he wanted to leave that lane and rejected projects that went in that direction. It was a risky move.
The actor returned to more interesting plots and roles, “Mud” and “Magic Mike” in 2012, or “Dallas Buyers Club” in 2013, for which he won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Critics’ Award, and which, together, underpinned the success of the McConaughey brand renewal.
Then he continued with other interesting films such as “Interstellar” (2014), “The dark tower” (2017) or “Serenity” (2019) and the television series “True Detective”, 2014, among others.
In “Greenlights” the actor left room for some complicated moments, such as the sexual abuse he suffered, when he was 18 years old, by a man who left him unconscious.
In another part of the book, he relates that he was blackmailed, at the age of 15, to practice sex, or also that he suffered sexual harassment by several rich women during his youth.

He also has space in his story to talk about love. “Fifteen years later, she is the only woman with whom I have wanted to go on a date, sleep or wake up with her,” McConaughey wrote about the model Camila Alves, whom he married in 2012 and with whom he shares his life and three children .
They met in July 2006. “I didn’t say ‘who is that?’ I said ‘what is that?’ We had a great connection. That night I spoke better Portuguese and Spanish than ever since, do you know what I mean? “Said the actor in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
“She knew what it was, who it was,” he wrote about her in the book to add: “Camila is a natural law. A proper name. Inevitable”.
