“Former students of Sciences Po Grenoble, we wish to defend academic freedom”

Tribune. For several months, the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies (IEP) has been the center of many controversies, with the culmination of December 14, 2021, the suspension for four months of a professor for breaches of obligations linked to civil servant status. We, former students of the IEP of Grenoble, coming from all walks of life, observe with dismay the different positions taken by elected personalities, ministers, academics and some of our comrades against of our school.

We condemn all the violence against teachers, researchers and students. Investigations are underway, and we are leaving it to the right people to make the decisions that will be necessary.

If we want to speak today, it is above all to take a step back from the situation and express our concern about the potentially dangerous interference of the public authorities in academic affairs, and the political instrumentalization of this. a matter of which we are witnesses and which is deeply intolerable to us.

The IEP of Grenoble, like other French universities, is accused of ideological drift, at the expense of the plurality of research in social sciences. This type of accusation testifies not only to a lack of knowledge of the variety and scope of research fields, but also of the quality of research within the laboratories Pacte de recherche en sciences sociales, Cerdap2 (Center for Studies and Research on Diplomacy, Public Administration and Politics), Cesice (Center for Studies on International Security and European Cooperation), and at the IEP, whose indicted subjects do not moreover form only a marginal share.

We strongly condemn the normalization of conceptually unfounded terms, borrowed from the far right, in the press, and in political discourse, which call into question the scientific rigor of the teacher-researchers of our school; and we support those who work on the concepts of racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, and on equality and anti-discrimination issues in general.

We protest against the decision announced by the president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Laurent Wauquiez, to end regional funding for the Grenoble IEP. As a reminder, the region’s financial support includes the allocation of scholarships to students in difficulty, support for social action and continuing education projects, in particular to facilitate access to higher education and employment: it is therefore the students who are most in need who will suffer the most.
