Netflix star Tanner Buchanan is interested in playing Robin in upcoming Batman movies, and has said that he would love to play a bisexual Wonder Boy.
Buchanan, who has starred in Cobra Kai and He’s All That, has repeatedly shared his aspirations to play Batman’s fellow vigilante opposite Robert Pattinson in upcoming DC reboots.
Marvel movies will have a trans character
Robin will appear as an LGTB + character in a new Batman comic
The 22-year-old actor spoke about his superhero dreams on the Just for Variety podcast, adding that he wouldn’t mind honoring the character’s recently revealed LGBT + identity.
“If I get a chance to represent something like that, it’s amazing,” Buchanan said. “If they are willing to write it, then you know what? Of course, I will interpret it.”
Robin, Batman’s veteran sidekick, was revealed to be bisexual in a recent issue of the anthology series Batman: Urban Legends. In the comic, Tim Drake – the third character to take on Robin’s mantle – explored his close friendship with another male character named Bernard.
Bernard is kidnapped by a villain and Drake comes to his friend’s rescue. After the pair manage to get to safety, Bernard asks Tim on a date, which the young hero eagerly accepts.
Comic book writer Meghan Fitzmartin, who wrote the issue, told BBC Radio 4’s Today that Drake’s bisexuality felt like the “missing piece” in his narrative.
He shared that the creative team for the comic was thinking about the stories they wanted to tell as “it had been a long time since they had their own story.”
Fitzmartin explained, “I went back to reading a bunch of comics that I grew up with and spent some time with that character to figure out what stories he wanted to tell and there were pieces that were coming together that felt like they had no context without this final piece of making it happen. He realized his own sexuality, that this is part of who he is as a person and as a character.
He continued, “I felt like it was a missing piece to understand this character, so it was kind of a breakthrough in that direction.”
In an interview with CinemaBlend last month, Tanner Buchanan revealed his deep love for comics and superheroes. The Designated Survivor star shared that he is a “huge comic book fan” and has been a “superhero fan all my life.”
Your favorite superhero? Unsurprisingly, he is none other than Boy Wonder himself. And you’ve said that you already have an idea of the direction you’d like the character to take if he does.
“I’m very specific about what I want to do with it and then maybe move on to playing Nightwing,” Buchanan said. “I’ll get into a deep well if I keep talking about superheroes, so I’ll just leave it at that.”
Matt Reeve’s The Batman is slated for release in 2022. The film, packed with a grim aesthetic, stars Robert Patterson as Bruce Wayne, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as the superhero’s butler, Alfred, and Colin. Farrell as the crime lord, the Penguin.
It is not yet known if Robin will appear in the next film, its two planned sequels, or the announced spin-off television series for HBO Max.
So chances are high that a bisexual Robin played by Tanner Buchanan could happen in the future. But only time will tell.
